SAM SWEENEY & GRACE SMITH
HITCHIN TOWN HALL - OCTOBER 18th 2026
Join two of the most exciting fiddle players on the English folk scene for a night of musical connection, imagination and sheer virtuosity. Sam Sweeney and Grace Smith are both known for their deep knowledge of traditional music and their ability to make it sing in new and unexpected ways.
Sam Sweeney is one of the most recognisable and influential fiddlers in modern English folk. A founding member of Leveret and former fiddle player with Bellowhead, Sam’s career has seen him take centre stage in many of the genre’s most celebrated projects. His solo work – including the haunting "Made in the Great War" – has been widely acclaimed for its emotional depth and historical resonance. His playing combines breathtaking technical skill with a warmth and generosity that has made him a favourite with audiences across the UK and beyond.
Grace Smith brings a vibrant and distinctive voice to the tradition. Whether playing with her trio, with Katie Doherty & the Navigators, or as a soloist, she brings creativity, sensitivity and passion to everything she does. Her fiddle and viola playing draws from the English tradition but is always forward-looking – blending old and new with subtlety and flair. Her recent trio album "Overleaf" was praised for its originality and spirit, marking her out as a major talent in the instrumental folk scene.
Together, Sam and Grace create music that is rooted yet restless – grounded in the tunes and traditions of England, but always curious and inventive. Their duo performance is an intimate and absorbing experience: joyful, expressive and full of surprises.
Whether you're a lifelong folk fan or simply curious to hear what two world-class fiddlers can do with a couple of bows and a deep love for the music – this is a performance not to be missed.
